Paul Ryazanov shares the story of what it really takes to rebuild a business from zero in a new country — and why showing up consistently matters more than any strategy. This conversation with Donna Owen is one of the most honest discussions Paul has had about the challenges, failures, and hard-won lessons from over 20 years in business.
Moving to a new country resets everything.
It doesn’t matter how successful you were before. You start from zero. New network, new rules, new mindset, new way of doing business. The difference between the US and the UK alone is enormous — culture, expectations, pace, communication — everything shifts. The first months feel like you’re rebuilding your entire identity.
That’s the reality I faced when I moved to the UK three years ago.
What Rebuilding Actually Looks Like
When you arrive in a new market, there is no shortcut. You don’t get to carry over the reputation you built somewhere else. Nobody knows who you are. Nobody owes you a meeting.
The only thing that works is consistency. Showing up, delivering results, and doing it again the next day — even when it feels like starting from scratch.
Three years later, we’re not just surviving. We’re growing. We’re running events, winning new clients, helping businesses scale, and building real relationships. Today we work with 120 clients across the UK, US, and Australia.
That didn’t happen because of one clever marketing play. It happened because we kept showing up.
An Honest Conversation About the Journey
Recently, I sat down with Donna Owen for one of the most honest conversations I’ve had about the real challenges of building a business. No filters. No polished answers. Just real talk about what actually happens behind the scenes.
I shared lessons from over 20 years in business — and especially from the last three years of rebuilding in a completely new country.
We talked about the failures, the mistakes, and the moments where it would have been easier to quit. If you’re building something in a new market, this conversation will resonate.

Why This Matters for Founders
Starting over is not something most people talk about publicly. There is a tendency to only share the highlight reel — the revenue milestones, the big client wins, the conference appearances. But the honest version is far more useful.
Every founder, at some point, faces a moment where the foundations they built feel like they’ve disappeared. Whether it’s a market shift, a relocation, or a personal setback — the ability to rebuild from scratch is what separates businesses that last from businesses that don’t.
The lesson is simple: if you keep showing up and delivering, the results follow. Not immediately, but they follow.
