Why I Advise Every Client Like I Would My Mum

Table of Contents

Transparency. Honesty. Responsibility. People ask what the operating philosophy behind MageCloud is, and after a decade it has compressed down to something very short. Advise everyone the way you would advise your own mum. Play the long game. Sleep better at night. Be proud to be different. That is the entire thing, and each line carries more weight than it looks.

Why the Mum Test Is Harder Than It Sounds

Advise anyone as you would advise your mum sounds soft, almost like a slogan. It is actually the most demanding standard I know. If my mother came to me with a store and asked what she should spend money on, I would not upsell her. I would not recommend the expensive rebuild when a cheaper fix would do. I would tell her the uncomfortable truth even if it cost me the work.

The moment you hold every client to that test, a lot of standard agency behaviour becomes impossible. You cannot pad an invoice. You cannot recommend the thing that is good for you and bad for them. You cannot stay quiet about a problem because mentioning it is awkward. The test removes the easy, profitable shortcuts, which is exactly why most businesses do not adopt it. The same instinct sits behind how we earn trust without contracts, retainers, or sales pitches.

Why Playing the Long Game Pays

Play the long term. Almost every dishonest move in this industry is a short-term trade. You win a little now, on this invoice or this upsell, and you lose the relationship later. The honest move is usually the reverse: it costs you a little now and compounds into years of trust. I would rather cut a bill than keep a client who feels they were taken advantage of, which is why I have written about why I cut a client’s invoice in half.

The long game is also just easier to run. When you never have to remember which version of the truth you told which client, the business gets simpler. There is nothing to keep track of, because there is nothing to hide.

Why I Am Proud to Be Different

Sleep better at night. This is the real return on all of it. Running a business on transparency, honesty, and responsibility is not a marketing position for me. It is the thing that lets me close the laptop and not lie awake replaying a conversation where I shaded the truth to win.

Be proud to be different. Most of the industry does not work this way, and that used to feel like a disadvantage. It is the opposite. Being the agency that advises like family, in a market full of agencies that advise like salespeople, is the entire edge. It is the same generosity that sits behind why I still answer emails that pay nothing.
