How to Tell If an Ecommerce Event Is Worth Your Time

Table of Contents

I spent two days at ecommerce events in Manchester recently, and by the end my team and I were playing a game. We called it Find the Merchant, because among all the vendors, sponsors, and people selling to people who sell to people, actual store owners were genuinely hard to spot.

That game is the whole problem with the event calendar. Too many events are agencies and tools talking to other agencies and tools, with barely a real merchant in the room.

The test: who is actually there?

The single best signal of whether an event is worth your time is the audience. If the room is mostly service providers looking for clients, and you are a service provider, you are all fishing in an empty pond. If the room has real merchants with real problems, it is worth every hour. Ask the organiser who actually attends, not who is invited, before you commit.

This is the same selectiveness I bring to my own calendar. I would rather do fewer things well, the same reason I turn down work that is not the right fit.

What makes an event pay off

The good ones are where you learn something you can use or meet someone you can genuinely help. That means real conversations, not badge-scanning. It is why I put two weeks of thought into preparing a talk when I speak, because the value has to be real or the whole room wasted its time. And it is why smaller, focused formats often beat the big expo, the point behind where the real ROI actually is.

Protect your calendar like a budget

Your time is as spendable as your ad budget, and just as easy to waste. Vet events the way you would vet any investment: who is in the room, what will you leave with, and what is the opportunity cost of the two days. Saying no to the wrong events is how you have room for the right ones. It is the same discipline as getting the foundation right instead of chasing every shiny opportunity.

If you want to compare notes on which ecommerce events are actually worth it, book a call.
