Site Down and Afraid to Hand Over Access: A Trust Problem, Not a Tech One

“Site down, need help?” is how a lot of conversations with us begin. It happened with a local wine store in Chester whose site had been down for about a week.

After a couple of emails, the problem was solved. What makes the story worth telling is that we never actually did the fix.

She was afraid to hand access to a stranger

Bianca was understandably nervous about giving login details to someone she had never met. She did share them, then thought better of it and removed the access again. That instinct is completely reasonable, especially when the internet is full of people impersonating agencies to get exactly that.

So we gave her the right advice instead, and she applied it herself. The site went live. We celebrated by ordering a box of wine from her.

The lesson for agencies

Not every problem needs you to hold the keys. Sometimes the fastest route is to explain the fix clearly and let the owner do it. You lose the billable hours and you gain a customer who trusts you, which is worth considerably more. It is the same logic as talking a client out of a rebuild we could have billed.

Being the person who helps before there is a contract is why clients stay for years and it is the practical form of the one word that makes our team different.

The lesson for owners

Being cautious with access is right, but a week of downtime is enormously expensive for a small shop. Ask for advice early even if you are not ready to hand over credentials, and when you do grant access, scope it and remove it afterwards. Getting help quickly matters, which is why we care about answering fast and why some problems genuinely cannot wait.

If your site is down or behaving strangely, book a call and we will tell you what to do, access or not.
