The Origin Story
Every project starts with a frustration, and Ecommerce Camp UK was no different. For years, I had been attending ecommerce events and walking away feeling the same way — underwhelmed by content that was either too generic to be actionable or too sales-driven to be trustworthy. I kept having the same conversation with other ecommerce practitioners: where are the events built for people who actually run online stores? Where are the speakers who have dealt with the same operational challenges we deal with every day? Where is the community that understands what it is like to be responsible for a website that generates your livelihood?
Why I Decided to Build It Myself
After years of wishing someone would create the event I wanted to attend, I realised that the someone was going to have to be me. The idea behind Ecommerce Camp was simple: create an event and community run by practitioners, for practitioners, with zero vendor pitches and complete focus on actionable content from people who have actually done the work. No keynotes from marketing executives who have never managed an ecommerce store. No panels sponsored by platforms who want to sell you their solution. Just honest, practical knowledge from people who have been in the trenches and have real stories to share.
The Challenges of Starting Something New
Starting Ecommerce Camp was terrifying. I had never organised an event before. I did not have a massive network in the UK ecommerce community. I was competing for attention against established events with years of brand recognition and substantial marketing budgets. The first event was small — deliberately so — because I wanted to prove the concept before scaling it. I wanted to show that if you put the right people in a room and create the conditions for genuine conversation, something valuable would happen. And it did. The feedback from that first event was so overwhelmingly positive that I knew we had found something real.
Where We Are Now and Where We Are Going
Ecommerce Camp has grown from that first small gathering into a genuine community with regular events, an active online presence, and a growing library of content. But the core principle has never changed: everything we do must serve the merchant. Every speaker must earn their place by offering genuine value. Every event must leave attendees with actionable takeaways they can implement in their business. At MageCloud, building Ecommerce Camp has also made us a better agency, because the deep connections we have formed with merchants across the UK have given us a richer understanding of the real challenges facing ecommerce businesses. If you have been thinking about joining our community, there has never been a better time. We are growing, but we are growing with intention, and every new member makes the community stronger.
