Will Magento developers be replaced by AI? I have had a lot of conversations about this behind the scenes, and I have ended up somewhere that surprises people: AI may be the last real chance Magento has to stay in the market.
Why clients actually leave Magento
It is rarely about features. Most of the clients I see moving to Shopify go for one reason: supporting Magento costs a lot. Developer time is expensive, the talent pool is thinner every year, and routine maintenance carries a price tag that a hosted platform simply does not have.
When the platform is capable but the running cost is indefensible, finance wins the argument. That is a cost-of-ownership decision, exactly the factor most underweighted in the most expensive decision you will make.
Where AI changes the maths
If AI genuinely reduces the hours needed for the routine work, upgrades, patching, module conflicts, boilerplate, then the main reason to leave Magento weakens considerably. The platform’s flexibility was never the problem. The bill was.
That does not mean developers disappear. It means the commodity portion shrinks and the judgment stays, which is the same split I described in what survives as AI takes agency work and why an agency cannot only write code.
What still needs a human
Deciding what to build, spotting that a module will wreck your time to first byte, catching that 22,000 new customers are bots rather than buyers, and owning the outcome when peak weekend arrives. None of that is generated.
So the honest answer is that AI will not replace Magento developers. It may remove the cost argument that has been pushing merchants off the platform, and that is a very different story from the one usually told.
If you are weighing whether to stay on Magento or move, book a call and we will do the maths properly.
