The most overlooked thing in ecommerce SEO is not keywords, meta titles, or H1 tags. It is page indexing. If Google has not indexed a page, none of the rest matters.
I see it across so many stores. They are paying an SEO agency that produces content at scale: new pages targeting long-tail keywords, tidy meta titles, clean descriptions, well-formed H1s. Then I open Google Search Console and half those pages are not indexed at all. The work exists. Google just never put it in the index.
Why unindexed pages are wasted money
An unindexed page cannot rank, cannot earn impressions, and cannot bring a single visitor. You paid to create it and it is invisible. For a large catalogue this adds up fast: hundreds of product and content pages sitting outside the index while the invoice for producing them was paid in full.
This is the quiet failure behind a lot of “our SEO is not working” complaints. The content is fine. The indexing is broken, and nobody checked.
What actually causes it
Usually it is a mix: thin or duplicate pages Google decides are not worth indexing, crawl budget wasted on faceted-navigation URLs, weak internal linking that leaves pages orphaned, or slow server response that limits how much Google crawls. That last one ties straight back to fixing time to first byte, because a slow store gets crawled less. And clean measurement matters too, since you cannot fix what your analytics are misreporting.
Strong internal linking is one of the cheapest fixes, which is why I treat interlinking between related pages as core SEO work, not decoration.
Check the index before you buy more content
Before commissioning another batch of pages, open Search Console and see what is actually indexed. Fixing indexing on the content you already paid for is almost always higher return than producing more. It is the same principle as getting the foundation right before the next tactic, and exactly the kind of unglamorous audit a real partner runs before selling you more.
If you suspect your content is not being indexed, book a call and we will audit your coverage.
