If you run a Shopify store and look closely at your analytics, you have probably seen a spike of traffic from a town you do no business in: Council Bluffs, Iowa. It is not a sudden Midwestern love for your brand. It is ghost traffic.
Where the phantom visitors come from
Council Bluffs is home to one of Google’s largest data centers. A lot of the traffic attributed there is automated: crawlers, uptime monitors, preview bots, and various cloud services hitting your store. It shows up in Shopify’s reports as sessions, but there is no human on the other end and no chance of a sale.
On its own it is harmless. The danger is what it does to your decisions. Inflated session counts make your conversion rate look worse than it is and can send you chasing a traffic problem that does not exist, when the real issue is almost always conversion.
How to clean it out of your numbers
Filter it. In GA4 you can exclude known bot traffic and segment out the data-center ranges so your reports reflect real people. Cross-check Shopify’s native analytics against a filtered GA4 view, and treat any geography you have never marketed to with suspicion. This is the same discipline behind fixing GA4 data that is quietly wrong with server-side tracking. If the measurement is dirty, every decision downstream is too.
Once the ghosts are gone, your funnel finally tells the truth. That clean baseline is what makes A/B testing worth the budget, because you are optimizing against real behavior instead of noise.
Why this matters more than it looks
Bad data does not just mislead you, it compounds. A conversion rate that reads artificially low can kill a good campaign, justify a needless redesign, or hide a page that is actually working. Getting the numbers right is not a vanity exercise, it is the foundation, the same reason growth starts with getting the foundation right.
